Organic vapor typically refer to liquids that evaporate quickly (hence giving off vapors) and are petroleum based... a few examples are solvents in paint, nail polish remover, gasoline, and that smell from permanent markers. But the need for Organic Vapor Cartridge Protection can result from other Organic Vapors as well.  Organic compounds compromise an extremely wide range of chemicals. Most people think of organic as something alive or coming from living things, but this is really not an accurate description. Organic compounds are anything that contain carbon. Carbon is the basic building block of all organic substances. Because oil and petroleum products were once living things, and hence, contain carbon, they are organic compounds and contain organic vapor that they can give off in a work scenario. This may require Organic vapor Cartridge breathing protection. Because oil can be converted to so many things (gasoline, paint thinner, perfumes, plastics, etc) all of those materials are considered organic compounds. Organic Vapor can come from a variety of different items including a food item like onions that once cut, emit Onion oil that can be harmful to eyes and make breathing difficult. Thereby, creating the need for Full Face Respirator and Organic Vapor Cartridge protection.

Texas Safety Supply offers a complete line of respiratory protection that is needed for protection from Organic Vapors. We offer the North Safety n75001L Organic Vapor Cartridge as well as the 3M 6001 Organic Vapor Cartridge sold in pairs. Commonly referred to as a gas mask or gas masks, more accurately referred to as a Respirator or Full Face Respirator, the organic vapor cartridge works in conjunction with the gas mask, gas masks or full face respirator to provide respiratory breathing protection.

Identifying  whether an Organic Vapor cartridge is the correct form of protection is the first step. A different filter or filters may be needed dependent on the breathing risk. An excellent guide to the correct respiratory protection is offered by the CDC. The CDC offers what is called the "Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards" on their web site. You can go there to identify the correct Cartridge or Filter protection needed for your chemical hazard or to determine if Organic Vapor Cartridge protection is the correct choice for your hazard.

An important step in the decision making process in determining if Organic Vapor Filters are the correct choice or another type of hazardous filter is identifying the hazard filter protection needed via the Pocket Guide and then by selecting the correct type of gas mask or full face respiratory protection that is needed. An example follows for "Onion oil"

Reviewing the CDC Pocket guide and the hazards that your Chemical Hazard possess will allow you to select the correct gas mask, Full Face Respirator or whether Organic Vapor Cartridges are the correct selection for the chemical hazard that you are working with or if the correct breathing protection may be needed from a different style of respiratory protection.
